Here are three tips for finding the right loan officer for your purchase.

I’ve had a couple of buyers recently who were unhappy with their loan officers. They did a Google search, sent in an online application, and found a lender that way. One lender was out of state, and the other was local, but I’d never heard of them. As we’ve been processing the transactions, communication with these lenders has been extremely difficult. 

With that in mind, here are a few tips for how to choose the right loan officer:

1. Have a great agent. If you have an excellent real estate agent you trust, they should ensure you’re in good shape with a loan officer before you look at homes. They’ll make sure that you get qualified, that you are working with a good lender, and that they have all your documentation so no surprises pop up later.

2. A good loan officer will do a lot of research. These lenders will ensure they have all the documentation they need, they’ll look through it, and often look through it again with their underwriter or loan processor to make sure they haven’t missed anything. This heads off many problems down the road.

3. Find a local loan officer. It’s crucial to find a loan officer both you and your agent trust who is local and can be reached easily, not just during weekdays, but maybe in the evenings and on weekends.
